YVON CHOUINARD: “LIFE IS A LOT EASIER IF YOU BREAK THE RULES THAN TRY AND CONFORM. WAY EASIER.”

Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard recently sat down for an hour-long conversation with Jamie Brisick, for The Surfer’s Journal’s Soundings podcast series. The waves north of Ventura that day were good, but with the pair waiting for the tide they rolled tape for an hour, with subjects including (but not limited to):

The deterioration of the environment, a spiritual connection to nature, why abalone cluster together, breaking the rules, blacksmithing, authenticity, getting rid of fossil fuels, the dog walking industry, Mr. Cool, protecting what you love, the process, Malibu, Dora, fly fishing philosophy, the 80/20 sports rule, karma, the bottom line, the future of the United States, change, money, the definition of happiness, controlling your breath, climbing El Cap, self-reliance, climate change, cooking pasta with two ingredients (olive oil doesn’t count), surfing a Bonzer, simplicity, spearfishing, why he doesn’t have a bookshelf, pessimism, travel, avalanches, life and death experiences generally, Earth, Mars, empire collapse, broken surfboards, foiling, learning more and more about less and less, alaias, soloing, advertising, a stiff upper lip, Zen Buddhism and transferring the company he founded to a not-for-profit trust.

It was a free-ranging conversation and you can listen to it here.
