Build the Best Product
Alpinist Yvon Chouinard founded Patagonia in 1973, naming the company after the wild and rugged region of southern South America. As a blacksmith who made his own pitons, Yvon wanted his clothing to be just as reliable and efficient as his climbing gear. Today we continue to build Patagonia clothes of the highest quality for outdoor enthusiasts who take their sport to the extreme.
Our Design Philosophy
Any garment we make must be long lasting, strong and as versatile as possible. It should also be as light as possible for its intended use, supple, feel dry and comfortable against the skin and be easy to care for. Environmental harm from manufacturing or farming, from dyes and finishes, should be as minimal as possible. Every garment should be beautiful. We design products that embody these qualities.

Alpinism remains the heart of a business that now makes clothes for rock and ice climbers, surfers, fly fishers and endurance athletes. These are all silent sports—none requires a motor—and the reward for each involves no audience and no prize other than hard-won grace.
Cause No Unnecessary Harm
We try to source materials and use processes that are less harmful to the earth without compromising quality. Because to us, quality is not only how well a product performs and holds up, but also how it’s made. We realise our efforts are far from perfect, but we’re trying and making headway. Our products include clothing and gear made from organically grown cotton, sustainably grazed merino wool, Traceable Down, recycled polyester, hemp and Tencel® lyocell.
Fair Trade Certified
Garment workers and farmers in emerging economies are paid some of the world’s lowest wages. Fair Trade can make a difference. For each piece of Fair Trade Certified clothing, we pay a premium they can use to improve their communities and elevate their standard of living. We began selling Fair Trade Certified clothing in 2014.
100% Traceable Down
100% Traceable Down provides the highest assurance of animal welfare in the apparel industry. As of fall 2014, it’s all we use. We trace it through our supply chain from parent farm to apparel factory to make sure the birds it came from were never force-fed or live-plucked, and that our down is never blended with down from sources we can’t trace. We began making recycled polyester from plastic soda bottles in 1993 the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to transform trash into fleece. By reducing the amount of virgin polyester in many of our products, we reduce our need for petroleum to make raw materials and cut landfill and incinerator waste.
Cotton is a natural fiber, but conventionally grown cotton is one of the dirtiest crops on the planet. Organic cotton is farmed without the usual mix of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, defoliants and fertilisers. It uses non-GMO seeds and leverages nature-based solutions to manage pests and build healthy soil. We’ve used only organic cotton since 1996.
Hemp is one of nature’s most durable and low-impact fibers. It requires little water or fertiliser and needs no herbicides or pesticides. Hemp grows quickly and can be replanted and harvested several times a year. Its cultivation improves the health of degraded soil and rotates well with food crops. We’ve used it since 1997.
By choosing renewable natural rubber from hevea trees grown in the highlands of Guatemala, we’re reducing CO2 emissions by up to ~80% when compared to conventional, nonrenewable neoprene—causing less harm to the planet we love and the oceans that give us waves to ride.
